The Mentorship Programs

A meeting like ATBC & SCB Africa 2011 is a great opportunity for experienced scientists to connect with younger researchers and students and vice versa. Both ATBC and SCB Africa have ongoing Mentorship Programs that you may wish to be involved in.

We hope that these Programs will enrich both Mentor and Mentee. We strongly encourage all participants to sign up.

The ATBC Mentorship Program

Approaching a senior scientist can be daunting and the opportunities to chat at length with new people are actually quite few in ATBC conferences. Cultural and age differences can also make getting to know new people even more difficult.

This year ATBC will continue with a recent tradition that, one in which we engage in a little social engineering and offer you the chance to sign up to our Mentorship Program as either a Mentor or a Mentee.

Here are some initial details (More information forthcoming):

  1. To be a Mentor you should (A) have earned your PhD 10 or more years ago, (B) possess a lot of research/practitioner/publication experience, and (C) mature and helpful. If you find yourself in that gray area zone, you decide!
  2. To be a Mentee you should be a continuing student, or a fresh PhD graduate, or early in your Post-PhD career.
  3. In the online registration form indicate your interest in the Program and we will send you more information. Alternatively, you can download a form (COMING UP SOON!) that will provide us with information about you that we can use to match you with a suitable Mentor/Mentee.
  4. In the interest of maximising this experience, we will also attempt to 'mix up' nationalities.
  5. You will be put in touch with your Mentor/Mentee via email.
  6. You both commit to finding each other at the conference and setting up a meeting time for at least one hour.

The SCB Africa Section Communications/Mentoring Program

The Society for Conservation Biology (SCB) Africa Section Communications/Mentoring Program (funded by John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation) is enrolling new sets of Mentors and Mentees to participate in the eight month mentoring program. The enrollment exercise will commence from March to June 2011.

The Program’s goal is to increase the capacity of upcoming African Conservation Biologists to write proposals or publish their research in international peer-reviewed journals.

Interested Mentors and Mentees should please download and complete the interest form. Please note that SCB membership is not a requirement for enrollment; however, preference will be given to SCB members. Please send completed forms to Ademola Ajagbe with cc: to Mary Molokwu before 30th June 2011.
