Money

The currency in Tanzania is called the Tanzanian Shilling, TSH.

Exchange rates vary, but generally:

1 USD = 1500 TSH,

1 Pound Sterling = 2380 TSH, and

1 Euro = 2043 TSH.

For the most recent rates, visit http://www.nbctz.com/ and refer to foreign exchange ‘selling’ rates.

Tanzania requires that all foreign exchange be changed with licensed foreign exchange dealers. While money can be exchanged at most tourist hotels, the best rates of exchange are often obtained at a licensed Bureau de Change or in the banks. It is no longer necessary to declare your foreign currency when entering the country. Many tourist shops in Arusha will accept USD and Euros.

Note the following:

  • Pre 2003 US $100 dollar bills are no longer accepted in Tanzania.
  • Denominations that are less that US $50 or Euro 50 or Pound Sterling 50 are exchanged at substantially LOWER rates. It is best to come with denominations of 50 or greater for making payments, and < 50 for tips, and purchasing smaller items. Coin are not exchangable.
  • Banks and exchange bureaus will not accept floppy, dirty, torn, multiply-folded, poked or abused bills, regardless of their value. For your convenience, come with new, crisp, clean, unfolded bills

Credit cards & Traveller's Cheques

Credit cards are useful in major tourist hotels, restaurants, gift shops and airline offices and their use in Tanzania is growing every day. They will charge a 5% surcharge (fee), however, on each transaction made. VISA cards are probably the more useful card to have because you can withdraw money (TZS) from more ATMs than with MasterCard.

Once you are away from tourist areas cash is the way to go in Tanzania. Your best option may be to withdraw Tanzanian shillings with your DEBIT card however, because CREDIT CARDS view ATM withdrawals as a cash advance!

Traveller's Cheques are a cumbersome alternative. Not only are fewer and fewer foreign exchange bureaus accepting them, but you also get a very low exchange rate for them.
