Going Carbon Neutral...
In 2007 ATBC and SCB independently recognised the need to minimise the environmental impact of our meetings. In addition to the registration fees, meeting costs now involve a mandatory carbon fee that is used to offset the carbon emissions caused by participants' travel to the meeting.
We are in the process of identifying a suitable local forest project that will offset this year's emissions. As soon as we have done so, we will feature the project on this site. Depending on the location of the project, we will try to organise a fieldtrip to the project for interested parties.

The 2011 Carbon emissions offset project:
The ATBC-SCB Carbon Offset Committee has unanimously voted for the Kasigau Corridor REDD Project to offset the C emissions associated with travel of participants to the meeting. The Kasigau Corridor is located in Kenya, lying between Tsavo East and West. The area is home of the "Big Five" and many communities trying to live traditional lives that are compatible with conserving habitat and wildlife. For the past decade Wildlife Works and the Kenya Wildlife Service have been involved in conserving both ecological and social capital in the Kasigau area, setting an example for all of Africa. The Kasigau is the first project to deliver REDD Verified Carbon Standard (VCS), a leading global standard for verifying the integrity of carbon offset programs.
The Kasigau region is undergoing rejuvenation of natural vegetation. Conservation successes in the area has brought back wildlife in an area experiencing human population expansion in the face of deteriorating climate conditions. Habitat loss, failed pastoral agriculture activities, and overall economic decline in the area is being reversed since Wildlife Works began its restoration program. Much-needed job creation, preserved habitat, re-introduced ecotourism, and improved education and health care for the local region are important successes attributable to Wildlife Workds. It is for all of these reasons that ATBC + SCB Africa chose to support the project.

Dates: 17 – 19 June
Join Dr. Ron Woolf Abrams - a member of the Arusha 2011 Carbon Offset Committee - on a visit to Kasigau. We will stay in the revamped Camp Kenya (www.campkenya.com), see wildlife, meet local people working in the REDD program, see facilities developed by carbon funding and walk through the woodland restoration project area.
